Digital Navigator Program!

The Digital Navigator program began on April 25th with 15 digital navigators from the communities of Everett, Malden and Revere receiving training from the National Digital Inclusion Alliance. NDIA walked the digital navigators through basics of customer service interaction with providers, questions and prompts in basic internet, and technical assistance with devices, resources to share with community members on affordable internet, and more. The digital navigators have been visiting community rec centers and senior centers, and have been working with their local public library. Digital Navigators are learning invaluable skills around customer service, internet and device assistance, and community needs such as affordable internet, devices and more, while community members are gaining an additional free resource to assist in much needed digital literacy.

We want to acknowledge Comcast’s financial contribution in funding the training portion of our program, and Commonwealth Corporation’s YouthWorks for funding case management and youth wages.
Job Fairs!

During the month of April and May, six of our Connecting Activities schools – Chelsea, Everett, Malden, Revere, Somerville and Woburn High School - participated in our Spring Job Fair series. Over 60 employers from the Metro North Region participated in our job fairs, meeting over 1000 students! Employers from Market Basket, Kellys Roast Beef, Old Navy, Metro North YMCA, Legoland and Amazon were just some of the many amazing employers who took the time to meet with our students.
This year, our hopes were to connect employers with eager, ready to work, professional high school students. We did just that! During our job fairs, employers were able to talk to students about different positions that were open, career opportunities that were available and gave students time to ask questions.
The MassHire Metro North Youth Team wishes to highlight an employer who attended our job fairs and made connections with students and school staff -- Legoland Discovery Center in Assembly Row, Somerville! This year, they hired 15 students from Malden, Revere and Woburn High School! This gives many students who have not worked before the chance to grow professionally and learn the skills needed to continue growing throughout their career.

We look forward to our Fall Job Series! If you are interested in hosting a table or want to learn more about the work we do, please reach out to Carlos Fuentes cfuentes@masshiremetronorth.org or Grace Evans, gevans@masshiremetronorth.org.

MN-PACMAN  Pre-Apprentice Construction and Maintenance Program Graduation!!

On Thursday, May 19, 2022, 9 students graduated from the MN-PACMAN pre-apprenticeship program.

This was the third and final cohort, which brings us to the end of the 2020 grant provided by the Kenneth J. Donnelly Workforce Success Grant through the Massachusetts Office of Labor and Workforce Development and Commonwealth Corporation. The graduation was held in person, at the AC Hotel.  In attendance were 8 of our 9 graduates.  One graduate, Clifford Altidor, was unable to attend because he had just started his new position as a Carpenter’s Apprentice.  The other 8 students celebrated with family, friends and program instructors, managers, employers, and community partners.

The program began with a brief introduction by Cyndy Chapin-Levesque who managed the grant followed by congratulations from instructors Steve Sullivan, Lauren McCann and Alexis Kubana who were the three course teachers that worked tirelessly to ensure students learned and grew during the training which prepared them to start their careers in either the construction trades or facilities maintenance.

Words of encouragement were given by program partners Chris Albrizio-Lee, the President & CEO of the MassHire Metro North Workforce Board; Saraugh Fitah, Operations Manager, Winn Companies; Jeffrey Theilman, President & CEO of the International Institute of the New England and Greg Beeman, the President & CEO of Associated Builders and Contractors of Massachusetts.  Greg Beeman talked to the students about the new faces of tradespeople and how their unique experiences as immigrants, their bi-lingual language skills and successful completion of the PACMAN training program will bring diversity and passion to the industry. He provided statistics on how the building trades provide continuing education, and family sustaining wages with career ladders.

Two students, Storm Roland and Abelehaq Ait Chaib, were chosen by their instructors and classmates to speak at graduation. Both students talked about the support and encouragement they received from their instructors and program manager.  Storm is pursuing a career as an electrician and found the training provided him with the necessary tools to pursue his dreams.  Abdelahaq expressed his gratitude to everyone in the program and to his classmates for their support and encouragement. Right after the graduation, he met with a recruiter from Winn Companies to talk about job opportunities in the facilities maintenance field!

A highlight of the event was when  Elfatmi Ouard, a graduate from Cohort 2 and now working as a Maintenance Technician with Winn Companies, spoke to the class about his new career, the positive changes in his life and the excellent facilities maintenance apprenticeship program that Winn Companies sponsors through Wentworth Institute.  He gave a special shout out to the Job Readiness instructors, Alexis Kubana and Lauren McCann, for stressing the importance of showing up each day and being on time, prepared to work with his team and contribute his ideas and knowledge.

The graduation ended with the students receiving their diplomas followed by an opportunity for all the attendees to network and get to know one another.

FREE TRAINING - ADVANCED MANUFACTURING
300-HOUR ROBOTICS PROGRAM
MINUTEMAN TECHNICAL INSTITUTE IN LEXINGTON

STARTS AUGUST 22, 2022 - DON’T WAIT TO REGISTER!

Next month, a free, grant-funded, 300-hour training program in Robotic Technician at Minuteman Technical Institute (MTI) will begin at the adult evening division of Minuteman Regional Vocational Technical High School in Lexington.

The program, sponsored by the Northeast Advanced Manufacturing Consortium (NAMC), begins on August 22, 2022 and ends on November 23, 2022. It will meet Monday through Thursday from 4:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

The program is tuition-free for qualified applicants.

NAMC Executive Director Maryanne Ham hopes that people will take advantage of this chance to train for jobs in a flourishing industry with plentiful openings.

“Robotics is a 21-st century field that has abundant career opportunities for trained workers who will make a competitive hourly wage,” she noted. “This program offers comprehensive training so graduates are ready for exciting, entry-level positions that feature excellent potential for growth.”

Applicants must be at least 18 years old, have their high school diploma or GED/HiSET and be unemployed or underemployed. Anyone interested must apply through email Deb Lipton, Career Councilor for MassHire, at dlipton@mhncc.com

The MassHire Metro North Career Center is a partner in this program. Experts there will advise graduates of the program on resume writing and interviewing so they can more readily obtain employment.

The program prepares students for entry-level positions as robotic technicians. People in that role typically do troubleshooting, repairing, assembling and reassembling automated machines, said MTI Executive Director Nancy Houle. “If students have an interest, a willingness to learn and can commit to the hours needed for the program,” said Houle, “they will be successful.”

Recently MassINC released a new report
"Sizing up Massachusetts' Looming Skilled-Worker Shortage"
.

This report follows up on a 2014 report with UMass Donahue Institute where it was predicted that the 2020's would be the first decade in the Commonwealth to see a reduction in the state's working-age, college-educated population. In this new report, the authors explore how the pandemic has likely impacted previous estimates and what this means for a state already facing labor challenges.
