Metro North: Student Work Resources

Welcome!

This is the first edition of the Student Resources newsletter. Unlike our normal job newsletter, I will only send out an updated version if new resources become available or students request specific resources. This is the essential list of resources I have compiled based on student meetings. Below you will find a resume and cover letter template, a guide to the rights that you have as a youth worker, some information about trade school, and directions on how to get a work permit once you find a job. If you have any questions about anything please reach out to me at honeal@masshiremetronorth.org. You can also make an appointment with any of our job coaches using the links at the bottom of this email!

A resume is something that you’ll need for any job you want in the future. You can cater the resume to different industries. This template has more information about how you can do that as well as what you should put on a resume. You can work on this by yourself and send it to a job coach for feedback or you can meet with a job coach to work on it together! To work on it, click on the title above to open the page and then download a copy onto your computer or your own Google Drive.

A cover letter is something that you’ll usually only need later in your career, but some internships and programs may ask for one now. It’s similar to a resume in that it explains your previous work history; the difference is that you elaborate more on how your experiences align with this job and you only pick one or two experiences to write about more in depth. This is something that you should talk to a job coach about, they can help you cater your experiences to whatever you’re applying for! The link for the template will be in the title and you can download a copy!

This is a guide to what you can do if you need any support after getting a job. You’re always welcome to make an appointment with a coach to talk about any issues that may arise, but if you don’t have time and you’re unsure of what to do, this reference sheet can help you remember what your rights are in the workplace as well as plan your next steps!

If you’re interested in going to trade school, this is a helpful guide to the connections that our organization has with local trade schools as well as information on how you can apply for tuition coverage through our career centers!

When you get a job, you’re going to need a work permit if you’re under 18. You’ll get it from your school and need your employer to fill it out before you submit it back to the school. Click on the link above to find more specific instructions.
