Roundup of Mass STEM Week 2021

from the
Metro North STEM Network

While we continue to be impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, our drive to present high quality STEM events never wanes. STEM Week 2021 events organized by Metro North STEM Network were once again webinar based. And once again we drew varied and engaging presentations. Through dozens of presenters during the week of October 18-22, over 1100 students and community members really could See Themselves in STEM!
HERE ARE SOME HIGHLIGHTS!

Events for Young Students
Dress Like A Scientist Day
The Dress Like A Scientist Day team of scientists, dressed in their everyday work gear –including overalls, boots, headlamp, and yes, scrubs – read their online story book and answered every question the elementary students asked: “Has Dr. B. ever been stung by a bee?”; “Did you always know you wanted to be a scientist?”; “Who was the first scientist ever?”; “How fast does a fish swim?”; “Can a firefly still see when its light is on?” And many more.
Students cheered as they heard their questions asked, and listened intently to the answers. One 3rd grader told her teacher that she had always thought about becoming a marine biologist, and now she knows she will.

Author Carrie Finison read her story Dozens of Doughnuts in a similarly charged Zoom atmosphere of hundreds of K-3 students. Finison was an engaging story book reader, priming the young audience as she got ready to read. This reading was followed by math related activities which student participated in enthusiastically.

Neither of these events aimed at K-3 students would have been as successful without all the dedicated teachers attending, dropping students’ questions and comments. Thank you!

Rocket Launchers with Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito
Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito visited the West Medford Community Center for STEM Week to kick off Lemelson-MIT joining the after-school program to offer twice weekly, hybrid STEM-immersion classes, a world-class educational opportunity for enrollees. In attendance were Mayor Breanna Lungo-Koehn, City Councilor Richard Caraviello and Rep. Paul Donato among other community supporters. The afternoon of fun events consisted of the kids inventing their own rocket launchers as solution for an international development challenge. (Photo credit: Joshua Qualls/Governor’s Press Office.)

Events for Older Students and Youth
Events, geared towards older students, presented insights into career pathways, current/future opportunities for training/employment, as well as many resources, words of wisdom, encouragement, and support for interested students.

Lookng to the Skies: Aviation Careers in the Air and
on the Ground
Professionals and Aviation students gathered to discuss the myriad of opportunities in Aviation education and employment. Themes emerged from both students and professionals around having passion from a young age, support to sustain their interest through secondary education, and a zen-like philosophy that if you’re in the place, on the right path, barriers will fall; opportunities will find you.

Journeys in STEM: Medical Students
Tufts University Medical students were open, honest, authentic as they shared their Journeys in STEM. And in so doing, they shared insights for high school students to find that just-right university which offers what a student may need before heading to medical school. They offered tips about knowing one’s self and standing in one’s truth as they pursue a STEM education.

Beyond Doctors and Nurses: Diverse Careers in Healthcare
In the “Beyond Doctors and Nurses: Diverse Careers in Healthcare” panel, representatives from CVS Health, Mass General Brigham, mySTEAMid, and Northern Essex Community College (NECC) presented career paths in research and pharmaceutical sciences. Colleen Moran, the Director of Workforce Integration at Mass General Brigham and an MNWB Board Member, explained how students can begin a career in healthcare by joining the Food Services Department, which will allow them to get their foot in the door and get acquainted with working in a hospital environment. Della Khoury, the Program Director and Instructor of Pharmacy Technology at NECC, explained how she began a career in Pharmacy Science by going to local hospitals and asking what entry-level jobs they have available. As she gained more experience, she was able to work her way up and become a Registered Pharmacist. She now instructs Pharmacy Technician Certificate courses at NECC. Thank you to MNWB Board Member, Rick LaFerriere, Director of Workforce Initiatives at CVS Health for moderating this panel!

Tufts University STEM Ambassadors
Tufts University STEM Ambassadors returned to STEM Week for a second year in a row. In addition to their educational pursuits, Ambassadors spend much of their time giving back to the community in various ways, including outreach efforts to share their passion for STEM. By speaking authentically on the 2 Ambassador panels about their journeys in STEM – self advocacy, skills development in high school, navigation of college application process, pursuit of their passion, and more – the Ambassadors were able to reach audiences pursuing similar STEM education. The audience, high school students, benefit directly from the discussion. The result is a direct, positive impact on students, allowing the high school student to make even more informed decisions about their STEM education and careers. Thanks to the Tufts University STEM Ambassadors Program for expanding presentation this year to reach a wider audience!
